The Ur-Sandal
Sandals of different kinds are a signature piece of Hanoians outfits. But one that stands out is the precursor of all of the young and flashy ones glowing around: the Tổ ong Slippers. More than footwear, they are work tools. No brainer: affordable, comfortable, organic, durable. The long lasting presence since communist times, when they were the only footwear available, make of the Dép tổ ong a loyal companion of workers' feet and grant them the status of Vietnam's unofficial national footwear.
Shamelessly functional they were designed to endure Vietnamese hard times: thick rubber soles for perdurance and their signature holes for breathability which actually coined their name: The honeycomb sandals. Made of natural rubber they come in simple colours beige and eggshell. They're design and mold has no original designer to be recognised with but it is rather a symbol of public appropriation of functional design for everyone. Curious fact: During the communist time the Dép tổ ong where the only shoes provided by the government. People would go to a distribution centre to get their pair and usually would not find their size. This led to social gathering in corners to exchange.
Common Property
Honestly, it is hard to tell where these sandals are produced since their design is common property and small workshops all over Vietnam produce them to supply the massive demand in cities and the countryside. There are different flavours of these sandals. Since we buy our products from a range of shops the branding differs from badge to badge, but we make sure that the quality is the same.

Usually you buy these sandals from a seller on a bike that meander the streets with a loudspeaker, offering the inventory. Part of the buying experience is that the seller removes the excess rubber on the edges with a scissor. We will leave the edges fringy for you to cut them. We recommend our smallest scissor for that.
